Anyone of color who think they have arrived in your utopia of financial nirvana, please listen to the words of Gingrich and Romney. In my political opinion after 30 years working with both sides of the aisle, I hear a change is a coming and it will not be good for anyone who is not just traditionally poor (below or at the government poverty level) but folks like me who are low to middle middle class. Those of us who in a month will eat out, take a vacation, purchase a car or just go shopping on a Saturday afternoon. We are in for rude awakenings by the 1% who view us as poor, food stamp using colored people.
In November 2008 there was a underlying spirit of hope. Hope that life may change to be more inclusive and less deroragatory towards men and women of diverse color and backgrounds. That is what President Obama's election subtly wormed into the psyche of the hopeful. We had hope that he and his democratic congress would turn the financial devastation caused by the prior administrations toward a better fiscal reality.
Where did the hope go? It is my opinion that the warm and fuzzy feeling we had was eaten alive by the inherent vulture culture of wall street, the jealousy of persons that just do not want anyone to do a little, just a little better than them. We can blame wall street for the global meltdown of the financial industry but, they did not kill their neighbor because they parked too close to their driveway or set fires in the countryside. Where so many of us place our hatred towards government is not the correct receptacle for that anger. It begins in the way we treat and respect ourselves and others. Mean spirits are running amok in this country. It is OK to disagree but to kill or mane a person because he disagrees. This is what we saw in yesterday's election. The candidates are willing to crucify each other for this election. $15 million to win a state election..one state--he has 49 more to go. Underlying this is the conservative/religious right/tea party belief that President Obama is wrong for this country. Why is President Obama wrong? First, he is intelligent, second he loves his wife, thirdly, his name is not John, Paul, or Theodore. Mr. and Mrs Obama through his election has placed a laser beam on the ignorance, deceitfulness, hatefulness and racism of our elected officials. These are the standard bearers of the land of the free..except if your name is different. You cannot have intelligent conversation and your wife cannot out think most of the previous wives of elected officials because traditionally politicos embraced ignorance. They have become standard bearers who disrespect the office of the President by acting like street corner hoochees placing their finger in the President's face, calling him a liar in the halls of congress, not denouncing the birthers, allowing and condoning every type of racist remark. If you are an elected official and do not stand up and tell your constituency they are wrong, are you not wrong too? I may not have agreed with McCain but he did step up and tell those at his rally that it was not true President Obama is not a Muslim. I will never forget that woman as she panted like a rabid dog declaring that then Candidate Barack Obama was a Muslim not an American. McCain ended the last of the agree to disagree gentlemen politicians.
"Though the colored man is no longer subject to barter and sale, he is surrounded by an adverse settlement which fetters all his movements. In his downward course he meets with no resistance, but his course upward is resented and resisted at every step of his progress. If he comes in ignorance, rags and wretchedness, he conforms to the popular belief of his character, and in that character he is welcome but if he shall come as a gentlemen, scholar and a statesman, he is hailed as a contradiction to the national faith concerning his race and hs coming is resented as impudence. In one case he may provoke contempt and derision, but in the other he is an affront to pride and provokes malice." So I ask you, has their been a change in the 100 years since this quote was written? Are we not facing men and women who hate the President because he is smart, kind and important? Do we not see, as a nation we cannot afford to move backwards? Do the African American, Latino, Asian not see that there are only 2 degrees of separation until our country is not the number one but the "the fallen Roman Empire" of the world. The Spirit of Hope must be revitalized, revisited and rewarded.
Reach down and reach back for the words of our ancestors, scholars, and history to realize we are heading for a fall. Not just one of us but all of us as an American nightmare.
